Have you ever wanted to make a difference in someone's lifetime in just one day? In our community, there are many low-income elderly and disabled citizens who have no means of making needed repairs to their homes. Since 1997, Hardin County Repair Affair has organized hundreds of volunteers to make minor repairs to homes in need. Home repairs are made in just one day, by both skilled and unskilled volunteers. Repairs go beyond making small improvements in the appearances of homes. They often address serious safety and access issues, and make it possible for people to stay in their homes.

The homeowners, chosen through an application and screening process, were physically and financially unable to make repairs to their homes.

Repair Affair focuses on the low-income, elderly and handicapped. The people must own their own home and agree to keep the home for at least one year after the event day. We focus on the winterization of the home, safety issues and doing minor repairs.

Hardin County Repair Affair invites you to join us on Saturday, June 5, 2010 for an event unlike any other. To date, 199 homes have been repaired. This year, we are asking for your help to make this event even more successful! Recruit a team of friends, family, church members, businesses, clubs or schools together, or volunteer yourself for this fun event.

There are no administration costs for paid staff or the location of the meetings. The only money spent besides for repairs is the cost of T-shirts, postage, and letterhead.

What We Accomplish In Just One Day Makes A Major Impact
Elderly and disabled people living on fixed incomes often don't have the means to make needed repairs to their homes. In many cases, their support system of family and friends is gone, and they either don't know how or won't ask for help.

Repair Affair projects ranging from building wheelchair ramps, hanging gutters, painting, plumbing and electrical repairs and installing water heaters, just to name a few from a vast list of possible projects.

The effect Repair Affair can have on an elderly or disabled person's life is well illustrated by the many stories told by volunteers and recipients of the event. A wheelchair ramp was built for an elderly man in Radcliff. Upon its completion, the man was wheeled down the new ramp to sit under a shade tree in his yard. Before that day, it had been six years since he had left the confines of his home, except by ambulance.

How Can You Make A Difference In Just One Day?

Repair Affair needs support from the community. You, your business, church, club, family, or friends can contribute and participate in various ways:

  • Teams of skilled and unskilled volunteers from businesses, civic clubs, and churches are needed to come out and work on event day.

  • Contributions are needed to purchase the materials to make the repairs on the homes.

  • Participants as a team member, make a tax-deductible contribution, or tell a friend or neighbor in need about Hardin County Repair Affair. You can make a difference by improving lives of your neighbors in our community.

Workers (volunteers) receive a T-shirt the day of the event and a lunch provided by other volunteers who don't have a team or church groups, women's groups, etc. Radio spots and newspaper coverage are all donated also.
